United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) President Philemon Yang will arrive in India on Tuesday for a four-day visit at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
During his stay, Yang and Jaishankar are expected to hold discussions on important multilateral and regional issues of mutual interest, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Yang is also scheduled to meet with President Droupadi Murmu.
In addition to New Delhi, Yang will visit Bengaluru, where he will tour Infosys and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The visit will offer him the opportunity to engage with experts on India’s innovations in areas such as sustainability and digital public infrastructure, the MEA noted.
Philemon Yang assumed the role of UNGA President on September 10. Under his leadership, the United Nations adopted the “A Pact for the Future,” a vision aimed at achieving multilateral solutions for a better world. Prior to this, Yang served as Cameroon’s Prime Minister.
In September 2024, Jaishankar met with Yang in New York, where they discussed key priorities for the UNGA. Jaishankar expressed India’s strong support for Yang’s vision, emphasizing unity in diversity, peace, and human dignity.
Sharing a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Pleased to meet UNGA President Philemon Yang today in New York. Assured him of India’s full support for his vision of Unity in Diversity, Peace, Human Sustainability, and Dignity for everyone everywhere.”
Yang also shared his thoughts on X, stating, “I had the pleasure of meeting India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar today. We discussed key priorities and issues for UNGA79, building on the outcomes of the Summit of the Future. I also appreciated India’s role in advancing the interests of the Global South.”
